Thinking about betting on golf this week? Then there are few opportunities better to look at than the British Open. The British Open is a prestigious golfing event that, for many Britons especially, is the highlight of the golfing season. The chance to see some of the best players in the world take part on local soil is always a treat. The 2021 edition of the British Open, too, looks to be an absolute belter in terms of the people involved.
As the oldest golfing tournament in the world, and with a cash prize exceeding $10m, this is a tournament that brings players from all around the world. This prestigious major event will be held at the Royal St. George’s Club in England, and looks set to be an absolute classic given the form of some of the names coming in.
With the 148th edition set to take place, then, what can golf betting fans look forward to as the tournament begins to get ready to tee off in what should be a great major event.
The betting favorites for The Open Championship 2021
As expected, there are some big names arriving at this tournament – and many of them in some very fine form indeed. However, the peculiar makeup of Sandwich means that this venue can be a toughie to overcome for even the finest of players.
Jon Rahm +800
For example, favorite Jon Rahm is seen as one of the best bets to go and win the whole thing. He’s arguably the best in the world at the moment, and has enjoyed success in venues like Lahinch and Portstewart in the past. However, the venue is a complete turnaround from Torrey Pines, and there are too many challenges that typically can frustrate Rahm’s natural game to make him the outright favorite we think. While an absolutely brilliant player, Rahm is not a natural fit for the layout and style of this course; few majors on the season can have the same likelihood of something strange taking place.
Brooks Koepka +1600
Of course, it would be foolish to write off the world class Brooks Koepka who looks like he could do damage this year. He’s back to full fitness and form, and has done well in the last two majors, finishing in the Top Four in the US PGA and US Open events. He’s a primer performer and has become a regular winner, picking up four of the last fifteen Major tournaments himself. Though his game isn’t as naturally suited to here as some of the others on the list, Koepka is a pretty good bet to cover for any Major given his big-event form.
Rory McIlroy +2000
The odds on McIlroy have seen quite a bit of up and down at various sportsbooks. Some had him all the way down at only +1600, while others had him in the range of +2000 to +2500 depending on the timing of your bet. He was considered the 2nd favorite for the tournament for a while, but a lot of action on both Brooks Koepka and Jordan Spieth coming in before closing of the Outright Winner market, the odds on Rory shot up a bit.
He'll be at home in the UK and ready to put on a great performance on a course that fits his golf game very well.
Patrick Cantlay +2800
Whilst most look to back the domestic performers given the oddities of the event, the USA have some impressive names arriving. If you want to back an outsider, though, go for Patrick Cantlay. He has enjoyed some decent form recently and has a game that is suited to the odd terrain and wild weather of this particular event. He’s done well at events like Carnoustie, and should have the ability to really go far here. He’s a high-value bet because he could draw such high returns, and his game is a natural fit for the challenges faced here.

Betting Outsiders
Looking at a few of the players who might not be considered betting favorites, there's a good bunch to chose from of competitors who could win the British Open the first time or of players who have re-found their form.
Shane Lowry +3300
Another big name who is expected to do well here is 2019 winner Shane Lowry. Unlike some who have taken part, Lowry has a game that is naturally built to compete and deal with the oddities of this particular venue. Lowry is a unique player, and his unicity makes him a fine pick for this particular event. He understands the oddities involving the weather better than most, and we back him as a fantastic choice to take the whole thing. While he isn’t the favorite, he has the nous, the knack, and the conditioning to handle the weird nature of this course. He has been slowly but surely working towards peaking for the defense of his title, and might just be finding form at the perfect moment.
Tyrell Hatton +4000
If you want to look to a more interesting candidate, though, take a look at Tyrrell Hatton. While Hatton might still be smarting from essentially blowing a title win at the Palmetto Championship, he’s another who has a naturally fitting game for this particular venue. This is the major that suits his playing style best, and his form on British should give him confidence that he can do well here. He’s finished in the top six before in The Open, and we can see him doing even better this year. Maybe not a winner, but someone who could have a chance if nothing else.
