Next weekend marks the 2021 edition of the Rocket Mortgage Classic which is being played at the Detroit Golf Club from July 2nd to the 5th. The private course in Wayne County, Detroit, has been home to the Rocket Mortgage Classic since 2019 when it became an annual PGA Tour event. The course features the trademark bent tree between the 7th and 8th holes, which was originally meant to show the original Indian Trail between Detroit and Pontiac. The course is split into a North Course and a South Course, which span 6.936 and 5,967 yards respectively.
In 2020, long hitter Bryson DeChambeau emerged victorious defeating runner up Matthew Wolff by three strokes to claim the $1.35 million prize money. In the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2019, Nate Lashley took top spot with relative ease as he outpaced runner up Doc Redman by an impressive six strokes.
This year’s field has no shortage of star power featuring recent PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson and recent Master’s winner Hideki Matsuyama. We would never call any PGA course easy, but the Detroit Golf Club has been known to have some fairly high scores with the winners of each of the last two years shooting a -23 and -25 respectively. The Rocket Mortgage Classic
Bryson Dechambeau is always a good bet to do well in a tournament, simply because of his ability to drive the ball and cut out strokes with his driver. There are a couple of reasons why we actually don’t like Dechambeau to win this week.
First, check the weather, it’s going to be wet and soggy all week long which could even cause some delays for the event. Bryson really leans on his tee shots to get him as far down the course as possible, but in rainy conditions, tee shots just don’t have the same legs behind them as they do when it's sunny.
Second, DeChambeau has been distracted for the past week or two with his ongoing feud with Brooks Koepka. The rivalry has received more media attention than ever, so don’t be surprised if DeChambeau doesn’t do as well as some people may think. In Detroit, Bryson seems like a great bet to win it all, but he will be popular and there are better plays on the board.
On Saturday, Watson was tied for first at the Travelers Championship, so players who do well the week before generally have better odds the next week. But on Sunday, Watson crumbled, falling well short of his bid for a fourth Travelers Championship win and his price at the moment is around +4500.
Watson is a great control hitter, with pinpoint accuracy that could help him navigate the poor weather. Watson’s weakness has always been his putting, and with soggy greens, we don’t like him enough to win it all. His lower odds are not the best +EV, so skip over Watson next week and check out some of these longer shots.
What to Expect
DeChambeau might be the top favorite, but Patrick Reed is ever so steady getting into from, especially with his recent showings at the U.S. Open and this past weekend at the Travelers Championship. His recent form coupled with the outlook for the Detroit course has landed him as the second favorite at +1100.
This year’s Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama is known as a quiet and humble superstar, but we think he has a chance to make a lot of noise at this year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic. Matsuyama has never been a big hitter like Bryson, but he did add his trademark pause at the top of his swing to try and add power when he came over to the PGA. Matsuyama has dominated the PGA in the very important stat of strokes gained per approach, and that accuracy and control should help him stay competitive this week.
