With the US Open now well and truly in full swing, anyone intrigued by golf betting will no doubt be glued to their TV sets. The tournament itself has got off to an intriguing start, with a few slow starts – especially from the defending winner of the tournament. How, then, has the 2021 US Open started? Let’s take a look.
The story so far
With the first two rounds complete, there are some intriguing starts already taking place. The most interesting result from day one, though, was from Matthew Wolff. Many expected that returning to competitive action at a draining tournament like this would be a nightmare for Wolff, but an opening day first-round 70 at Torrey Pines certainly solved any nerves that he might have hade. He kept it up on day two and is now sitting tied for 3rd at 4 under par.
Indeed, we seen a little bit of history, as Wolff managed just five pars – the fewest in a sub-par round in the U.S. Open history – as well as eight birdies and two double bogeys. This was his best scoring day since February, and it was a truly intriguing match-up for a player who admitted he just wanted to have a good time after such a tumultuous period.
However, the leaderboard has some pretty obvious names at the top. Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm have started like a tornado, though neither are in the lead at Torrey Pines. The reigning champion, though, Bryson DeChambeau, is having a bit of a poor start to the tournament. He looked out of contention early with a trio of bogeys, finishing with a 2-over 73 on day one nowhere near where he would have likely expected to be. He managed a better day two and fought his way up to an even par and he’s still in it with a chance to win.
Koepka, his long-term rival, went the opposite way and scored a 2-under 69 in the first round, but then went +2 on his way to even yesterday. As he looks to pick up a third US Open title in just five years, same as with DeChambeau it’s an intriguing start for a player who tends to do even better as the clutch moments come into focus.
One name who did shock a touch, though, was Russell Henley. The 32-year-old isn’t exactly a favourite, but his best major championship scoring day since 2018 with a 67. A 70 on day two has him stuck sharing the co-lead with Richard Brand.
Louis Oosthuizen is also having a strong opening, sitting at 4-under tied for 3rd.
A regular favorite for honors, Rory McIlroy has started off with a couple of up and down days. He’s using his impressive length off the tee to build up confidence ahead of a solid short game, but there’s been some kinks to fix. While he typically plays his way out of tournaments early, McIlroy is still in contention heading into the 3rd round at +1, but he needs a strong day 3.
How are our predictions doing?
Recently, we put together three names that we thought had a good chance of doing well at the US Open – Viktor Hovland, Cory Conners, and Tony Finau. How are the trio getting on, then?
Hovland has had a slow start to say the least, sitting T78 and struggling to really build any momentum on opening day. He’s at 74, +3 for the round. Day two wasn’t much better and he didn’t manage to make the cut.
Tony Finau didn’t do much better, in fact he didn’t do better at all. He did show some promise towards the end of round 1, but yesterday was not on point and he won’t be playing in the weekend.
Our last longshot pick Corey Conners started off the tournament with two bogeys on the first three holes and he never really recovered. Throughout the first two days he was constantly sitting between +2 and +5, and that’s not enough to make the cut.
What happens next?
In what was an engrossing couple of days, we move into the weekend where we should see some pretty interesting tournament changes. Some of the early favorites are doing well, while some – especially Wolff – are impressing hugely. It’s hard to say what comes next with a tournament that is as much about mindset as technique like the US Open, but we’re feeling pretty confident that golfing fans will see some awesome changes in the coming days.
Round three looks to be an exciting one, and with Wolff looking to keep up the pace after a blistering First Round, it will be intriguing to see what happens next.
Jon Rahm is in the mix at -3 and it’s good to see him back after having to be pulled in The Memorial where he had the most comfortable of leads by the end of round three. He is our favorite to come out on top this weekend where all of our top recommended sportsbooks have markets open!
