Favorites at Torrey Pines
With the biggest tournaments in golf not far around the corner, golf fans will be looking to take a punt on the upcoming US Open 2021. This is sure to be a cracking tournament, held out in the gorgeous Torrey Pines, CA. The 36-hole course opened up in the late 1950s, and today comprises of two 18-hole courses in total. It was designed by William F. Bell, and is known for having a high course rating of some 78.2 and 75.8 for the South and North sections, respectively.
Golfers will be keen to see who can come out on top in what looks to be a pretty crowded field for this major event and all of our recommended sportsbooks offer a variety of markets on the US Open.. There are a host of big names expected to go all the way, with the favorites including:
- Jon Rahm +800
- Bryson DeChambeau +1200
- Rory McIlroy +1200
- Justin Thomas +1200
- Dustin Johnson +1400
- Jordan Spieth +1400
- Brooks Koepka +1400
- Xander Schauffele +1400
With the best all up for the third major of the year, Jon Rahm has the lowest odds after his amazing play at the Memorial, before having to leave the event due to testing positive for Covid-19. Question is if he'll be cleared to return in time to practice on anything but a simulator.
Viktor Hovland is once again put right after the immediate favorites, let's see if he finds his game again after a poor last 36 holes at the Memorial.
One betting favorite who's been struggling
Once again we're weary of the odds on DeChambeau. He’s the reigning US Open champion, of course, but he’s also been struggling recently with his long-range shots which typically have come off for him so constantly. With a driving accuracy under 55%, he’s not exactly coming into the tournament he really wants to defend with enough consistency. Add in the fact he’s outside the Top 30 for all the majors since his US Open win, and it’s easy to see where the doubts stem from.
Off the green, too, expect the constant back-and-forth from Koepka and DeChambeau to at least take some of the media spotlight off their own play. Both have been increasingly rattled with one another, and we could see that regular flare-up take their eye off the ball – quite literally – during a tournament that both would absolutely love to head home with.
Out of the favorites above, Johnson and Rahm probably holds the best chances. However, don’t count our McIlroy who has a habit of finding form at just the right moments and going on pretty consistent runs for the duration of a full tournament.
What about Phil Mickelson?
Of course, one of the most interesting names missing on the above list is Phil Mickelson. Despite being the oldest winner of the Players Championship ever, the veteran is still missing a US Open title from his collection. He’s always been the bridesmaid here, with a series of runner-up results in the tournament he would most love to win. If he does go ahead to win it this year, it would be a flagship win – and give him his Grand Slam. With odds of +5000 though, he’s quite the long shot if he is going to go all of the way.
Stay tuned as we get closer to the tournament next week and we have our betting card ready.
