How the MVP is chosen
As the NBA regular season draws to a close, so does speculation about who will be awarded as this years Most Valuable Player – MVP.
While the name of the awards indicates what it's given for, usually it ends up in the hands of outstanding player who doesn't need breaks for injuries(you can't be the most valuable if you don't produce), and who's team has also won a lot of games.
The MVP is voted on by members of the basketball media, so if you see a lot of articles, tweets and various members of the US sports media talking about a certain player becoming MVP, there’s a good chance it’ll actually happen.
With just a few weeks left of the regular season, this is the situation we currently find ourselves in with lots of media members pointing towards Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets as the MVP of this season.
While both Stephen Curry and Joel Embiid has had terrific seasons and been the best player on their teams, Embiid has missed quite a few games due to injuries and Curry’s team the Golden State Warriors has not yet secured a spot in the playoffs.
This is where Jokic stands out, he’s played excellent basketball throughout the season and his team is near the top of the Western Conference standings.
Media Votes
As mentioned, media members seem to agree and not long ago a survey was done amongst ESPN writers, some of which are actual MVP voters as well.
The result of the survey was that most of the writers by an overwhelming factor believes Jokic is this years NBA MVP.
"Jokic, who has not missed a game this season, took 90 of the 101 first-place votes cast in ESPN's latest MVP straw poll, conducted this past weekend. If that result holds when the official ballots are cast next month, Jokic would be the first center to win MVP since Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal in 2000."
